BETH EL WINDOWS GOING TO OHIO
A beautiful and inspirational collection of stained glass windows by acclaimed artist David Holleman will soon be on its way to the Art Museum of Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio, as a permanent exhibit donated by Temple Beth El of Quincy.
The significant collection of windows, along with sculpture, mosaics and tapestry by David Holleman, beautified and enhanced the former Beth El synagogue on the corner of Hancock Street and Furnace Brook Parkway in Quincy. It was created over two decades as a result of the collaboration and close friendship of artist Holleman and the synagogue’s late Rabbi David Jacobs.
Temple Beth El and Temple Shalom of Milton have merged to form Congregation Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills, which has plans for a new spiritual home in Milton. Unfortunately, the future building cannot accommodate the stained glass windows and many of the other artifacts and decorations of the two former buildings, and Temple Beth El is happy to have found a home for its Holleman collection.
David Holleman was born in Arlington, Mass. in 1927, and became interested in art at a very early age. He attended the Children’s Art Center in the South End and the Carbee Art School. Following Army service during and after WWII, he attended the Boston Museum School and became an award winning artist in various media, including pottery, sculpture, mosaics and tapestry, eventually creating stained glass windows and other commissions for many religious buildings, mostly synagogues. He has exhibited all over the United States, and taught at Harvard University School of Design and at Stonehill College.
The difficult and delicate job of removing and shipping the Holleman Collection of windows will be performed by the Lyn Hovey Studio of Norton and Boston. It is being facilitated by former Beth El member Ed Gurwitch of Quincy. They are planning to begin the project on Thursday, Jan. 15th.
