The Torah is not a book facts (no matter what fundamentalists say), rather it is a book filled with life truths.
In the Garden of Eden story, why did G-d start humanity with one being, Adam, and not start things off by creating a billion diverse people all at once? After all, G-d could have populated the earth in many ways! The rabbis explain it this way, “So that no one can boast, “I am of nobler lineage,”. All humankind are descended from the same person. All are equal before G-d. And so the families of nations can not quarrel, saying “We are greater than other peoples.” (Talmud) All children of Adam share the same dam (blood).
